Job Description

Since 1981, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto has served as a place to call home for families with seriously ill children undergoing treatment. RMHC Toronto encompasses a House for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven Family Rooms in hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area and in Sudbury. The families we serve come from throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the world. 

Position Summary 

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Facilities Manager is responsible for the physical premises of the House and Family Rooms, including overseeing the safe operation of all building systems, security and technology to ensure optimal operating results and safeguarding the well being of resident families, staff and volunteers. 

He / she contributes to the Facilities Department budget development and monitoring as well as managing purchasing and capital expenditures and third-party contractors, all while remaining in compliance with provincial and federal regulations. 

The position will manage the Maintenance staff and the Assistant Manager, Housekeeping, and provides training, support and direction to department staff to achieve high performance. 

Key Contributions 

  • Selects, trains, supervises, schedules, and evaluates Maintenance Technicians and supervises the Assistant Manager of Housekeeping; 
  • Develops and implements life safety and security policies and procedures to safeguard residents, staff and volunteers as well as physical assets of the organization; 
  • Selects and evaluates third parties for services (i.e. copiers, snow removal, etc.) and projects; ensures that all contractors have the appropriate clearance, insurance, qualifications and appropriate supervision before they are on site to do repairs and/or services; 
  • Selects and evaluates contractors for projects as appropriate and in accordance to the RMHC Toronto fiscal budget; is responsible for ensuring RMHC Toronto receives value and performance via all third-party contractor contracts and relationships; 
  • Uses a sanctioned purchase order system and keeps the Computerized Maintenance Management System current. 
  • Schedules and prioritizes projects, repairs and preventative maintenance schedules; 
  • Takes appropriate & timely action to decrease any interruptions to our mission delivery while avoiding unnecessary expenses; 
  • Oversees and/or perform troubleshooting and repairs; maintains stock of repair parts and materials; 
  • Ensures efficient performance of technology and telecommunication systems to support all operations; 
  • Develops and administers the Facilities department budget; 
  • Participates in the development and achievement of strategic priorities; 
  • Works with building staff on regularly scheduled inspections of the House, Family Rooms physical space and equipment; 
  • Works with building staff on periodic inspections of all HVAC units, lighting, fire safety and security systems, etc.; 
  • Makes daily checks of the computerized building management systems; 
  • Supervises the building of walls, cubicles, and all other projects as needed; 
  • Oversees the ordering of all janitorial and housekeeping supplies, paper goods, and kitchen supplies; 
  • Locates and acquires parts for emergency breakdowns as required; 
  • Keeps current on new materials, techniques and equipment related to the performance of duties; 
  • Ensures compliance with all safety and security protocols as well as provincial and federal regulations; 
  • Performs other duties as needed. 


  • Minimum 5 to 7 years’ experience managing a commercial or residential facility; 
  • Post secondary education in Mechanical / Electrical sciences preferred; 
  • Experience working with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and building automated systems is mandatory; 
  • Basic knowledge of energy management principles and sustainability (LEED) preferred;
  • Knowledge of concepts, methods and techniques of building design, maintenance and construction; 
  • Proficiency in planning and organization of building maintenance; 
  • Effective leadership skills including the demonstrated ability to direct the work of building and housekeeping staff, contractors, service providers, etc.; 
  • Strong problem-solving skills including the ability to be resourceful in defining solutions; excellent project management skills are needed 
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment; 
  • Strong customer service skills including tact and courtesy; 
  • Proficiency in technology including Microsoft Office in a networked environment and other proprietary software related to building operations, life safety, security and information management; 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; 
  • Excellent relationship building skills including the ability to maintain strong collaboration and professional working relationships with management, staff, volunteers, contractors, and vendors. 

Hours of work 

The Facilities Manager is expected to work a minimum of 35 hours a week, typically from 9 a.m. until 5 pm. Monday to Friday. However, as needed, the position will need to work additional hours or will be required on evenings and /or weekends, especially if there is an emergency that needs to be dealt with urgently. The role is usually office-based but there may be times when travelling is required to our Family Room locations.
