Superintendent, Facility Services and Capital Planning

An opportunity for an experienced senior manager of people and resources, a leader who can affect and influence change, and is ready to play a mission­ critical role in ensuring that the Thames Valley District School Board can “build each student’s tomorrow, every day”.

Thames Valley District School Board is one of the largest district school boards in Ontario, covering Elgin, Oxford and Middlesex Counties, and including the City of London. With approximately 74,000 secondary and elementary students, supported by more than 7,600 teachers, principals and support staff, the Board is also one of the largest employers in southwestern Ontario. Thames Valley currently operates 132 elementary and 27 secondary schools, with an operating budget in excess of $900- million, translating into a complex mandate for the new Superintendent of Facility Services and Capital Planning.

In this key executive leadership role, you will support schools in achieving the Board’s mission of ‘We build each student’s tomorrow, every day”, and vision which states ”The Thames Valley learning community inspires innovation, embraces diversity, and celebrates achievements – a strong foundation for all students.” With these goals in mind, you will provide leadership and support in the areas of Custodial, Facility Operations, Maintenance, Building Renewal, Student Enrolment Planning, Pupil Accommodation Reviews, Capital Construction and all other related Property matters.

Reporting to the Associate Director and Treasurer – Organizational Support Services, and as an integral member of the senior administrative management team, you will ensure the delivery of custodial, facility, operations and maintenance services to Board schools and administrative facilities – whether provided in-house or by external contractors. You will direct and oversee the day-to-day management of Facility Services as well as major school renewal installations and upgrades to the facilities infrastructures.

Your sizeable portfolio as Superintendent also includes responsibility for contract negotiations and legal agreements related to your areas of accountability, environmental control and energy management through oversight of the effective development. operation and upgrading of energy systems, and the acquisition and sale of property. Reviewing and updating the Master Capital Plan, leading Pupil Accommodation Reviews and serving as Chair of the Capital Planning Coordinating Committee will be other integral aspects of your mandate.

A demonstrated leader who can work effectively in a collaborative decision-making environment, you bring superior interpersonal, communication, team-building and management skills, innovate thinking, and a proven ability to engage community members and to effect and influence change. Your strengths in human and financial resources management will be evident as you provide leadership for approximately 650 Facility Services staff (FTE), including custodial, maintenance, supervisors, coordinators and support staff, and see to the development of the annual Facility Services budget­ more than $80-million for school operations and $49.1-million for school renewal/condition.

All candidates must either hold Ontario Supervisory Officer qualifications or be eligible for direct entry into a Supervisory Officer program. Experience in a senior management role, ideally in a multi-facility/plan site, is essential. Ideally, you will also have a background as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Architect.
